Mr. Frank's Library Web Notes: "Welcome, Changes."

We welcome all to a new school year, which is one of the major changes in the educational journey of our students. In the Library, change is evident in diverse ways. First, we are now in the process of removing books unread in 5 or more years, for which we will be seeking new homes. To do so, we will have a hallway giveaway table set up outside the Library, with plans for a similar weekend set-up outside the Church, after Sunday of Masses. This "purging" action leads to another change: creating shelf space for new acquisitions. But, before shelving them, we plan on having a comprehensive display, introducing students to these books. A third change is a recently completed project identifying the reading level of each of the 7,000+ books in the Library's collection. Each work has a Lexile level score helping students know the reading difficulty of the text. At the same time (beginning after Labor Day), unchanged is my Tuesday and Thursday presence, with students able to borrow & return books during morning break, lunchtime, after school, and during scheduled Class visits. However, such changes matter most when students avail themselves of the Library's resources, demonstrating an enjoyable commitment to reading. When encouraged and supported by family, friends, and faculty, I believe that our students' landscape of learning will be satisfyingly expanded during this new school year.

Frank Ayala

My name is Frank Ayala, known as “Mr. Frank” to all staff and students. After a career in College Administration, I am now in the 17th year of my Library ministry at St.Boss.

My own educational journey includes a B.A. in Social Sciences from CSULB; a M.A. from Columbia University, Teachers College; and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Research from UCLA. This degree background aided my service as a Student Affairs Dean at Princeton University, Columbia College of C.U., and Occidental College, as well as VPSA at the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, TX. At the other end of the educational pipeline, I have also been a classroom teacher at both the elementary and secondary levels in the U.S. (in Philadelphia) and abroad (as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Tanzania, East Africa). What I see as a meaningful common Life thread is my love of reading & learning that I seek to share with our students.
